'scapes.
By using the medium of oil paint, I am able to build upon the almost transparent layers and luminous colours to capture the depth and movement of the ocean. The subject is built upon with layers of vibrant greens and bright whites to create a striking, three-dimensional form, reaching out at the viewer. This is in juxtaposition with the application of darker tones on the sides of the composition to represent the incredible depth and abyss of the ocean.
Within the work of ‘Peaks & Valleys’, I explore the idea that this world we live in is as easily destroyed as the paper that the subject matter it is represented by. I have chosen the seascape as a vessel for this composition, as water is the life blood of our world and in turn, of humanity. Without water, we cease to exist. However, we treat our environment - particularly our waterways and oceans with blatant disregard.
Creases in the seascape imagery rise and fall across the work, drawing the audience in and imploring them to traverse this new landscape across the canvas. This presents a strong reminder of the fragility of where we live and the environment we inhabit.
