Parting of the Seas
Oil on linen
183 x 107cm

By using the medium of oil paint, I am able to build upon the almost transparent layers and luminous colours to capture the depth and movement of the ocean. The papers edge is built upon with layers of vibrant greens and bright whites to create a striking, three-dimensional form, reaching out at the viewer. This is in juxtaposition with the application of darker tones on the sides of the composition to represent the incredible depth and abyss of the ocean.

Within the work of ‘Parting of the Seas’, I explore the idea that this world we live in is as easily destroyed as the paper that the subject matter it is represented by. I have chosen the seascape as a vessel for this composition, as water is the life blood of our world and in turn, of humanity. Without water, we cease to exist. However, we treat our environment - particularly our waterways and oceans with blatant disregard.

The tear through the centre of the work commands the audience’s attention and present a strong reminder of the fragility of where we live and the environment we inhabit. As we move into the future, we must ask ourselves if we will allow the tear between saving our home or the point of disrepair to grow, or will we bring the sides back together and close the gaping hole we have created.
